Hello, Cruel World: It's Time to Feel Old
Welcome to 2022, welcome to my New Year’s resolution - to offer up at least one post a day for my Substack newsletter - and welcome to my apology for the near-complete absence of posts for the past few months.
To paraphrase a certain paranoid android, I think you ought to know that I was feeling very depressed, and to that I can only add that, frankly, I’m not feeling much better. That said, I’m still possessed of enough genetically-instilled optimism to see if a daily regimen of writing will help steer me in the right direction, and it’d be nice to think that I could actually get a bit more paid work from proper journalistic outlets in the new year, too. For now, though, this is as a good a place to start as any, right?
A few weeks ago, I shared a Spotify playlist on social media called 92 FOR ‘92, and I did so for no particular reason beyond the fact that I’d stumbled upon it in my playlist archives and remembered just how much I’d liked it. Today, I realized that every single song - or, at the very least, every single album from which the song derives - was released 30 years ago this year, which is also the year I graduated from college.
Christ, that makes me feel old…and if it’s going to make me feel old, then by God, it’s going to make you feel old, too.
Here’s the playlist:
92 from ‘92
And as a bonus, here are 11 videos - that’s 9 + 2 videos - from that playlist.
Well, technically, the last one isn’t a video, it’s actually a live performance, but it’s the performance that made me fall in love with the song, so that’s the one I’m going with, and if you’ve never seen it, hopefully you’ll love the guest vocalists who come onstage as much as I do every damned time I watch it.
