Just a Couple of Characters: KURT FULLER & XANDER BERKELEY
With the impending conclusion of my contributions to the A.V. Club’s Random Roles feature, I’ve been feeling a little depressed. I can’t really express to you how much I enjoy getting the opportunity to ask actors about their craft…or letting actors talk about their craft while I just sit back and enjoy the ride.
In the midst of my depression, I was listening to John Ross Bowie’s podcast Household Faces, which is - to offer up its tagline - a character actor interviewing other character actors, and during John’s recent interview with Kurt Fuller, Kurt mentioned having done a play with Xander Berkeley. Having interviewed both Kurt and Xander in the past, I suddenly found myself thinking about how much fun it would be to talk to both of those guys at the same time…and upon thinking that, I realized, “Wait a minute: I still have their contact info, so why can’t I talk to both of those guys at the same time?”
So I reached out to both of them, and they both immediately agreed to the conversation, which brings us to our newest semi-recurring feature: Just a Couple of Characters, where I talk to two working actors about their career…or they talk and I listen.
Eh, either way, the end result is still entertaining.
I also decided that it’d be way more fun if you could see them talking, at least partially because Xander is so delightfully expressive when telling stories, which is why you’ve been gifted with a video.
At the very beginning, you will note a bit of weirdness at the bottom of the screen, where there are seemingly two Xander Berkeleys. That’s because he started the Zoom call on his iPhone, switched over to his computer, and then we had to wait a few seconds for the iPhone to drop off. I would’ve just started the video after that drop-off had occurred, but there’s a great moment involving Kurt’s phone that I didn’t want to lose.
Okay, that’s it, folks. Enjoy…and stay tuned, because we’ve got another one of these coming up very soon: I’m talking to Jim Beaver and Stephen Tobolowsky on Monday!
