One of the most enjoyable aspects of my time as senior editor/writer for this brief rebirth of Q Magazine was serving as the curator of a weekly playlist which we delivered on Friday mornings and called - wait for it - Q: The Music for the Weekend.
Every Thursday, I would generally annoy and eventually harass my teammates into sending over five songs each, and then - using 10 songs of my own - would do everything in my power to create some sort of sonic flow for the resulting conglomeration of songs. At first there were five of us - myself, Amy Hughes, Dominic Utton, and Andrew Barker - and we were doing 30 songs in each playlist, and when Peter Helman joined us, we upped it to 35.
We all had very disparate tastes when it came to contributing tunes, which made it a bit of a challenge sometimes to figure out how I was going to make it work, and I won’t say that I always succeeded, but we ended up spotlighting a lot of amazing music, some old and some new, and I know for a fact that we educated a few folks along the way, because they told me so.
As such, after learning that Q was no more, I decided to reach out and say, “You know what we need to do? We need to do one more playlist filled with goodbye and farewell songs, and we’ll call it Q: The Final Music.”
Naturally, everyone was onboard.
Now, I’ll admit, the “goodbye” and “farewell” theme evolved a bit, and it would be fair to say that our previously-acknowledged displeasure with the conclusion of the site and the way that conclusion took place… Well, let’s just say that it seeped into the song selection here and there.
In addition, we went over 35 songs this time. In fact, we went over it by 20 goddamned songs, because fuck it, we deserved it.
So here it is… Q: The Final Music.
Give it a spin and remember us fondly.
