Saying "Hi" to a Staggering Number of New Subscribers with a Few Flashbacks
Talk About a Good Excuse to Take a Look Back...
I suddenly picked up a major influx of new subscribers between Tuesday and today, and I can only attribute this to my decision to slip the link to this newsletter into the comments section of my Random Roles with John Astin. I regret nothing. Whether I ever do another RR interview or not, I’ll still be trying to add more content to this newsletter, so I saw no reason to not indulge in a bit of self-promotion, and given how well it worked out, I’m damned glad I did…just as I’m damned glad to have you new subscribers here!
I’ve been doing this solo endeavor of mine for over a year now, and it’s been extremely pleasing to see how many folks have found my work, shared it, and even thrown their hard-earned money behind my efforts. That said, I know that if you’re at all like me, even those of you who’ve been onboard for awhile now might still get an email about a new article, think to yourself, “I’ll need to check that out this evening when I’m not in the middle of something,” and then promptly forget about it altogether. As such, you might also appreciate the opportunity for a quick best-of piece, one that highlights some of my favorite pieces since I’ve started this thing…and what better way to kick things off than with The Piece That Started It All?

Okay, so I’ve just realized that this actually brings us up to May 2021, if that should give you an idea of just how much content I put up when I first started That Thing They Did back in November of 2020. Granted, a lot of it was going through the archives and digging out previously-unpublished conversations that I was never able to sell or place anywhere, rescuing material from my old, now-defunct website (News, Reviews & Interviews), and doing some highlight reels from publications I’d written for in the past. Still, it’s clear to me now that I’m going to need to do a Pt. 2 of this look back, and to be honest, I’m less worried about it at this point, because I’m being reminded just how enjoyable some of this stuff was to do. It’s about time other people realized how enjoyable it is to read, too.
Oh, and before I go, here’s the obligatory reminder:
